#88 Sanctuary Seventen

Updated: May 9

The citizens of Sanctuary-17 live under the glow of an eternal sunset, its orange hue stretching across the artificial sky. Every day, they gather in the great hall, eyes fixed on the towering screen as it replays The Event—the explosion that ended the old world. They are reminded of their purpose: obedience ensures survival, compliance brings order. And above all, when the screen turns yellow, the chosen must step forward. Beyond the Gate lies ascension, the final reward for those who serve without question. No one has ever returned, but that is the way of things.

When the selection begins, the crowd shuffles uneasily. Names appear, and the chosen step forward, their faces blank. But one among them is different. He has spent years watching, calculating, questioning the cycle. He has traced the paths of those who left, studied the systems that govern the city. And now, his own name glows on the screen. They expect him to walk forward in silence, just like the others. But he refuses.

As the enforcers close in, he makes his move—dodging through the assembly, slipping into the hidden corridors beyond the Gate. What he finds there is worse than he ever imagined. Instead of an open world, there are endless corridors lined with frozen bodies, stacked like archives in a forgotten library. Control panels blink and hum, watched by silent overseers who monitor the selection process. The truth is undeniable: there is no ascension, no paradise beyond the walls. There is only processing. The chosen are not sent away. They are repurposed.

With every second, alarms scream through the halls. The enforcers are coming. He must act now, before the system erases him like all the others. He fumbles with the controls, triggering an override, forcing the great screen in the hall to reveal what he has seen. Thousands of eyes turn upward as their belief in ascension shatters. Panic spreads. The order is crumbling.

But the architects of Sanctuary-17 will not relinquish control so easily. As the ground trembles and the halls flood with enforcers, he faces a final choice: escape into the unknown or die ensuring the truth is remembered. In the end, perhaps it was never about survival. Perhaps it was about breaking the cycle—so that, one day, someone else might finally step through the Gate and find freedom on the other side.
