#127 The Bridge
Updated: Jun 8

The villagers gathered regularly to discuss the bridge.
“It’s dangerous,” they said.
“It’ll change everything.”
“It’ll ruin the old way of life.”
“The people on the other side will flood in.”
“The children won’t remember who they are.”
For years they held meetings, wrote articles, signed petitions and made speeches warning of the bridge’s terrible consequences.
Then they built it anyway.
Within a generation, everything they feared had happened.
Within two generations, nobody could remember why anyone had objected.
Within three generations, the descendants of those who built it called anyone questioning the bridge a dangerous extremist.
And an even bigger bridge was planned.
They planned meetings, prepared articles, prepared petitions and drafted speeches warning of the bridge’s terrible consequences.
